Photographs: Little Bennett Regional Park
Clarksburg, Maryland
Today, is Arbor Day for the State of Maryland. Nationally, it is celebrated on April 30th, though each state can choose its own date to recognize this annual event. Traditionally, there will be plantings of trees in honor of the day and other activities in support of the environment. This unusual tree was photographed during a visit at a nearby regional park. I chose to call it an "angel tree" but have no idea if the growth on it is normal or abnormal ~ but found the shape to be striking and beautifully resembling the wings of an angel.
TREES by Joyce Kilmer [1886-1918], a beloved American Poet, his first book of poems was published in 1911 and titled, A Summer of Love. TREES is certainly his most well known poem and was originally published, 1913, in Poetry Magazine, later to be featured in his second book of poems. Kilmer was sadly killed by a German sniper during his tour of service in World War I.
A very special day is coming on Friday, April 9.

It is sad that Kilmer did not get to write more poetry.

Trees are pretty amazing, all the elements they withstand, broken limbs, holes being made in their trunks. They have many scars that make them all the more beautiful.

We got our hawthorn tree for free from the Arbor Foundation when it wasn't much more than a stick. Every year it has lots of pretty red berries that stay on the tree through winter. The birds love to eat them.
