WEDNESDAY but not quite WORDLESS

Smithsonian National Zoological Park
Washington, DC

How to spend a perfect spring or summer day?  At the zoo!  But that was "once upon a time",
though the time will come again when we can enjoy our own zoo . . .
here we flashback with some favorite photos during visits there.

From various news stories and photos of zoos all 'round the nation and the world,
many zoo animals seem to be really enjoying the peace-and-quiet
and lack of "we rambunctious visitors"during this time.

Could they be telling us how we should alter our behavior in the future when we visit them.

THE WILD ANIMALS OF BANDHAVGARH, Part Two

ASIATIC JACKAL ~ LEOPARD ~ ELEPHANT
Photographed in the wild at Bandhavgarh National Park, Madhya Pradesh, Central India, December 2016

Our first post on the wild animals of Bandhavgarh National Park was on February 11.  If you wish to do so, you can click here to view the post and read about the featured langurs.  As I'd written in that post, my daughter, son-in-law and grandson had traveled to Kolkata, India in December for vacation ~ one of the high points of their trip a tour-jeep safari of several days through the Bandhavgarh National Park in Central India.  It was extraordinary in that they did see abundant wildlife, in their natural environment, not something one can ever be assured of when traveling in nature's homeland.  The photographs posted earlier, and again today are their photographs which I have certainly enjoyed and hope you will as well.  [Note: You may notice that mama elephant and her baby are chained, this is a temporary measure for protection until the baby is older and stronger and they can safely return to and roam freely in their natural habitat.]
Come back tomorrow if you can please, when we'll post a few more photographs of the Bandhavgarh wildlife and then join us on Wednesday to see the magnificent Bengal tiger.  Thank you.

THE WILD ANIMALS OF BANDHAVGARH ~ and CATURDAY ART

In December, my daughter, son-in-law and grandson traveled to Kolkata, India for a three-week vacation.  One of the highlights was a side trip to the state of Madhya Pradesh in Central India where they spent several days on safari, enjoying and photographing the wildlife at Bandhavgarh National Park.  One never can know for sure, on trips such as these, whether wildlife will be seen in their natural environment or not.  But in this case, they were truly lucky ~ traveling out into the wilds, they saw langur, jackal, spotted deer, abundant bird life, leopard, and yes ~ tiger.  What an amazing adventure!  Over the next few weeks, I'll be sharing many of their photographs, beautiful pictures of beautiful animals, living as they were meant to live.

And just for fun, because today is CATURDAY ART day,
two Langur ... seemed appropriate (pun intended) for upcoming Valentine's Day!

SATURDAY PHOTO HUNT: YOUTH
This montage was really so much fun to create; these photos (taken quite a few years
ago) when my little grandson crawled over to "examine" his big sister ~ who was
ever so patient as he poked-and-prodded and checked her out!  Ah, youth!

52 SNAPSHOTS OF LIFE: BELOW
The word today, Week 18, is "below".  I cannot take credit for this photo, it was
sent to me by my son from his family vacation trip to Cozumel ~ taken of my dear
granddaughter (who is also the patient young girl above being poked years earlier)
enjoying scuba diving and the beautiful world below.

THANKFUL FOR ~

BAO BAO
Bao Bao [meaning precious ~ or treasure], born August 23, 2013
at the Smithsonian National Zoo in Washington, DC.
Now a rolypoly ball of black-and-white fur, she spends her days
eating bamboo, climbing a tree or two, and basking in sunshine ~
and is generally oblivious to all who come to ooh-and-aah over her!
A Giant Panda she was named at the
age of 100-days as is the Chinese tradition, and will relocate to China at age four.

LING-LING and HSING-HSING

Arrived at the National Zoo in 1972 amidst great diplomatic fanfare.
At the time I was a member of FONZ [Friends of
the National Zoo] and my primary volunteer activity was to do behavioral watch with
animals.  Reflecting back, it was only the "luck of the draw", not experience or
knowledge I'm sure ~ that my assignment for over a year was to observe and note the
behavior of Ling-Ling and Hsing-Hsing as they adjusted to their new home.
