ONCE UPON A CHRISTMAS
I sat by my window on Christmas eve night.
Outside I saw red-and-green city lights everbright.
Outside I saw red-and-green city lights everbright.
I wanted to see Santa arrive in his sleigh.
All the reindeer too, Rudolph leading the way.
I'd decorated my window just so Santa would see,
how much his arrival meant to me.
There were twinkle-lights hung to show him our home,
and my first ornament swayed in the wind, dangling alone.
T'was my First Christmas, how special it would be,
to see them all come and put things 'neath our tree.
And I did stay awake, my little eyes did not flutter.
"But where is Santa?", my Mommy heard me utter.
The wind through my window, made my nose cold.
Yet I stayed at my post. I was brave. I was bold.
When dawn came 'round on my first Christmas day,
I knew Santa had come ~ but when ~ couldn't say.
The reindeer had nibbled at carrots. I saw shreds on the floor.
Santa sipped at his Cola. Not much, the bottle still held more.
I had not baked cookies, I don't yet know how!
Store-bought wouldn't do. Not ever, not now!
Yes. On this Christmas morning, I knew Santa had come.
To my home. And I hope to all others, as he always has done.
My stocking was filled with great toys and a treat.
For which I am so thankful. The treat I'll soon eat!!
But I remembered that morn, falling to sleep after a long winter's night ~
the real gift of Christmas is the love I receive each day.
Thank You, Santa
~ maybe next year I'll see you when you come to visit ~
