We couldn't really complete the month of Boolatry without a visit to...are you ready? Yes...a graveyard, a real one! This one is right here in our own hometown. A historic place, and the last home of a famous native son (well, maybe, lots of controversy there).
If you want to visit just find your way to 515 West Fayette Street in Baltimore, where you'll discover Westminster Hall, Burying Grounds and Catacombs. Established in 1786 it is the resting place for hundreds of soldiers from the American Revolution and Civil War as well as political and business leaders of the times.
It's most well known occupant is certainly Edgar Allan Poe. I have visited there, today JUNE visits virtually, with a rose and a quote ~
Poe's classic poem of love, loss and descension into madness. Though one most often hears the above quote, the original poem is very long and thoughtful and can easily be found online. It was first published in 1845, only a few years before Poe's untimely death.
And just to lighten up our Caturday Art post, JUNE wears her Baltimore RAVENS cap ... who are standing 5/3/0 at the top of the AFC.
June, Lynn knows things about the Raven and Edgar Allan Poe. Me, not so much. But what I really want to know is how to get a tiny hat my size just like yours. Precious
ReplyDeleteDear Precious ... the tiny hat? Just have your Mommy check her email ............... MEOW
Deletethis is perfect. I have to say in Englihs Lit classes in 11 and 12 years of school, they did not have to force me to read Edgar Allen Poe, I read all she gave us in class and more. I did not remeber he lived so very long ago. I am always quoting nevermore nevermore. along with nevermind. LOL
ReplyDeleteHave only watched movies made from Poe's stories, June.
ReplyDeleteHow fun it was that you got to visit that famous tombstone, June.
ReplyDeleteYou look quite nice sitting on that very special tombstone June :)
ReplyDeletePurrs, Julie
Hee! Hee! June, your Mom's Art made our Mom laugh out loud! And you look terrific in a ball cap! Purrs Marv
ReplyDeleteThat sounds like a fun place to visit to me. Love your Raven's cap, Juney!
ReplyDeleteJuney I hear Ravens are smart but I am 100% sure you are smarter...Love you picture
ReplyDeleteHugs Cecilia
Very interesting post June. XO
ReplyDeleteEdgar Allen Poe was a very skerry guy! Love, Roary (love your artwork!)
ReplyDeleteThat's really cool!
ReplyDeleteThat used to be one of my favourite poems at school although I could never learn it all by heart. I just went and read it again. It is many years since I have done so, but I still find it intriguing.
ReplyDeleteI always enjoyed Poe's poetry and stories though the stories did creep me out. Nice spooky picture of you June, that goes well with the season!
ReplyDeleteThat is something fabulous to see anytime of year sweet June, you look terrific there!
ReplyDeleteOMC I LOVE Poe...especially because he had a tortie!!!
ReplyDeleteHow cool that Poe's burial place is right there. And Juney, we think you (and the raven) look great!
ReplyDeleteWhoa! TW had a friend, who she met as a co-worker, who was a descendant of this Poe guy. Her family changed the spelling of their last name to Poh. Isn't Babe Ruth also buried in Balto?
ReplyDeleteThe Babe was a Baltimore son. The home he grew up in is a museum, of sorts. But he is buried at Gate of Heaven Cemetery on New York.
DeleteMy parents love cemeteries, they would like it there.
ReplyDeleteWow, you are on a very furmouse grave, June. Don't let that raven poke your pretty self.
ReplyDeleteAnd we hope your team wins! We don't think ouur lions will be roaring too hard...and now I just realized how that football team got its name! Duh!! LOL!
I've always been a fan of Edgar Allan Poe, his poems and short stories (though some of his poems are so long they could almost be called stories!). And I love visiting old cemeteries and looking for ghosts. Haven't done it in years, though...not much fun without the love of my life with whom to share it. Watch out for that raven, June!
ReplyDeleteWe took a guided tour of that cemetery when we lived there. It is a spooky place with lots of secrets.
ReplyDeletePoe was an amazing genius, and i think he was very sad or depressed most of his life. His headstone is most fitting.
