When the ZH was in Washington, DC recently "we" got to go to the National Zoo. We saw lions and tigers and bears, er panda bears that is! I mostly enjoyed the gorillas. I took along some bananas as a treat for this mama gorilla. As you can see she didn't have particularly good table manners, throwing the peels on the ground like that! The ZH told me the story of when she was "young" and was a FONZ for many years (that's a Friend of the National Zoo) and did lots of volunteer work there. Once upon a time, a lowland gorilla named Femelle was thought to be pregnant. The ZH would go on preg-watch two nights a week (in the wee hours of the dark). But after a couple months, the zoo people decided to tranquilize Femelle and examine her and found she was not pregnant at all ~ just way, way overweight! Now that I think about it, maybe I shouldn't have brought all these bananas with me ...
I'm not a big fan of zoos ... I prefer animals to have more living space and a more natural environment. But they do some good work to keep species going that might otherwise become extinct. Love this pic though.
