THE LETTER E ~ Environment

 ENVIRONMENT

The environment, individually/collectively, should be foremost in all minds.  During April we celebrate Earth Day, April 22 and Arbor Day, April 28.  In our homes, neighborhoods and communities, and places of work, there are things we can do to have a positive impact on our environment, reducing the effects of climate change today and for future generations. Yours may be small steps, but can and will make a difference. [Badges follow this post for Earth Day and Arbor Day, feel free to copy/use, without credit on your own social media.]

POGO☺ by Walt Kelly. Walt Kelly was a well known and beloved American journalist and cartoonist whose syndicated comic strip was featured in U.S. newspapers for over 25 years, and published in 20 books. His work spoke largely to his political and social views of the times.  [Walt Kelly, 1913-1973]  The POGO☺ cartoon above first appeared for Earth Day, April 22, 1970 and has become an iconic representation of this day for over fifty-plus years since.  Used thousands of times, likely altered thousands more ~ at one time, it was a feature of an exhibit honoring Kelly's work, at the NEWSEUM [closed 12/2019] in Washington, D.C.

We have taken part for many years in the annual event, DONA NOBIS PACEM, Blog for Peace, held in early November, sponsored by Mimi Lenox.  In 2019, the theme was Change Your Climate.  Our post that year featured an image of earth, split. Each section, but for one, included our own photographs of animals or grandchildren, our future so much more threatened by climate change.  On one panel we showed the famous POGO☺ cartoon, [slightly altered].

Sadly, if we were posting today, in 2023 ~ we'd only find ourselves adding more trash, more garbage, depleting our resources, fighting against more devastating natural disasters, and diminishing species or the complete loss of species.  Yes.  The enemy is us.

  3. Great words of wisdom. People are their own worst enemy and they are only making things worse every second of every day for the most part.

  8. We all need to do our part to help keep the world from experiencing more of these natural disasters brought on by climate change. It's sad to think the Pogo cartoon was first published in 1970 and it is still relevant today.

  9. A beautiful post and so very important! It breaks my heart every week when we roll out our trash can and our recycle can and every house on our street only has a trash can out - really?!

  10. The last phrase says it all..."the enemy is us". Here's hoping the next generations are better than the last.

  12. What a great post this is. We all need to pitch in and do whatever it takes to help our planet!

  13. The environment has been a lifelong concern of mine. We recycle, and support our surrounding water keepers, but they are often fighting an uphill battle with industry and the politicians who always side with industry. Health problems make all efforts increasingly harder for me ... I think taking good care of feral cats is part of environmentalism as it makes people aware of preserving environments that are friendly to animal life, and therefore to human life, too.

  14. I agree, Earth Day should be everyday, we don't have a spare planet hanging around. Thanks for joining our Thankful Thursday Blog Hop!

  15. We all agree with this post! We need to protect the world for all those future generations of kitties! Happy Easter June! (and Zulu thanks you for your sympathy about mom spying on him while he tries to take a bath!)

  16. Our current war is fighting for our environment. If it gets worse the Earth will survive but without us.

  19. It's heartbreaking to see the cartoon which nails the problem, even as far back as 1970. And there hasn't been nearly enough done for our planet in the years in-between. It will take a certain communal mindset to make a real difference. We need more like Greta Thunberg, and less like Trump.

  20. We do not tend our garden planet well, and we each do what we can i just hope we can all get together to do enough.

  21. TBT: I sure remember Pogo and the cast of scandalous politicians of the time characters barely disguised as other animals. I think Walt Kelly was my earliest exposure to political/social satire. I'm sure it also was to slightly past and current comic artists.

  22. Sad how only a few seem to realize what humans are going to Mother Earth.
