IN MEMORY OF MARG ELMENDORF ~ "THE HAPPY MIDDLE"

There are no happy endings.  Endings are the saddest part.
So just give me a happy middle and a very happy start.
So wrote the poet Shel Silverstein.

If we wanted to name a friend who gave the pet world a "happy middle" for more years than one could count, her name would be Marg.
Let us begin with the happy start, in upstate New York, where she grew up, the love of animals embedded in her spirit and leading her to earn a degree in animal husbandry.  Then, as a young woman, she worked her way down the East Coast ~ largely on farms, and in stables ~ training and working with horses.  Teaching riding to the young and ultimately settling in Charleston, SC.  Some years later, Marg reached the dream of purchasing her own small farm to the west, in rural Anderson, SC.
And now comes the "happy middle" when we in the pet community began to get to know and love our Marg through her blog, MARG'S ANIMALS.  For it was on this farm, in this life, that she shared with us those animals she so loved.  Two mini-donkeys, Smoke and Joe.  Her beloved Ande, always running at her side, the dog who got on so well with every critter on the farm!  And the kitties!  Her inside kitties, outside kitties, porch kitties, barn kitties.
She wrote of each with love in every word, with humor, with whimsy, she never forgot a name. Any who fell ill made the long trip to town for vet care no matter the cost.  She photographed each with an artist's eye.  She cried at each loss, we cried with her.  We shared her joy at each new arrival ~ for no stray, no feral, no litter of newborns brought by a neighbor ~ was ever turned away from her door.  There was always room for more.  All lived in harmony.
Time passes for all, and the time came when Smoke and Joe moved to the farm next door, but Marg could walk to the fence line to rub their noses and bid a 'hee-haw morning' to each.  Sweet Ande crossed her bridge.  As did many beloved kitties and neighbors knew not to bring new kitties now.  The long drive to town was getting more difficult.  Older hands found feeding so many harder, old bones ached walking out to the barn kitties ~ yes, much was changing now.

We believe that as her "happy middle" was coming to a close,
and Marg moved on from her earthly life,
she simply began another "happy start".
For on that day, there just had to be hundreds and hundreds of her animals,
who probably brought a lot of their friends, waiting to welcome her.
To hee-haw.  To bark.  To meow.
In one voice, together ... all were saying, welcome home, Marg.

  1. Marg has left a huge hole in the lives of future animals and I can see from the photos she must have her own huge farm in heaven.

  3. I did not know Marg but certainly felt like I did as the community of friends she garnered through the years was passionate about her and her devotion to animals. What an incredibly special lady she was. The story is in the smile and Marg had a smile that said "love"..............Heaven is so lucky to have her now and she obviously will have a place in the hearts of those who love her forever as well.

  5. Such a beautiful tribute to a wonderful lady. I had to stop reading to dry the tears, and still they come. I was very sad when she stopped blogging but understood why.
When I was first told the cancer had returned and was incurable in 2017 she wrote me such a lovely email telling me I could beat it. It was her who made me realise that it wasn't the end and that I could fight it. Thank you, Marg for giving me the strength I needed in the beginning.
She will be missed by so many including all the animals she has loved and taken care of.

  10. Oh dear- What a wonderful, beautiful and bittersweet tribute to a wonderful, beautiful human being. We, too, were sad when Marg stopped blogging, but also understood. We didn't know Marg personally, but one didn't need to to know the kind of person she was. Men aren't supposed to cry and all that bull, but this cat dad can't help but wipe away some tears as I read this powerful, personal post. I'm sure the reunion on the other side will be a most loving one, and my heart- along with Smudge's and her mom's- are heavy and sad to learn of this. This is beautiful, Ann. Just beautiful.

  11. Ann, this is a wonderful tribute to an incredibly special person. I deeply missed her blogging when she stopped, though like others, understood why. I wish I'd known of Marg's earlier life with horses, I would have loved to connect with her about that. My thoughts and prayers to you and to all those whose lives she touched. ♥

  12. An inspired, kind and caring life for those around us less able is surely the best creator of good karma and personal happiness and achievement. May Marge's next life be even more wonderful than this. She will be dearly missed by all whose path brought them either to Marge's door or just crossed.

I never met Marg in person but I will always remember her as a kind and loving woman...whose love for animals was second to none. Heaven has gained a special animal caretaker, and I hope my furbabies who are there seek her out for love and comfort. RIP, Marg.

this Ann, is an awesome tribute to an awesome lady, friend, and fellow blogger. And I know these memories, as well as those who knew her personally, be it in “real life “ or social media, will never forget Marg. Just as I know, if you and I
lived to be 1000, we won’t ever forget the “ smoke N joe cam pane “ 💚💙
to my fellow St Francis friend, I know you were happy to be reunited with your family, friends, cats, dogs, and ponies, but maybe the greatest sight you saw entering the kingdom of heaven, was to see the donkey, who carried Mary into
Bethlehem. Rest well Marg 💚💙💙💚. Laura

  20. What a beautiful post for Marg. We know her from blogging for several years and thought she was such a sweet lady. Mom loves Donkeys, so that was special for her to find someone who had a couple. May she now rest in peace surrounded by all her furry ones.

No doubt all the critters she touched are mewing and wagging their tails at the gates of heaven waiting patiently in line to greet their long time friend. We remember all the photos and all the kitties, and Ande, and Smoke and Joe, but most dearly we remember Marg, the lady with the biggest heart. No ending for Marg, just a new beginning in a place of pure joy.
