THANKFUL FOR ~

BAO BAO
Bao Bao [meaning precious ~ or treasure], born August 23, 2013
at the Smithsonian National Zoo in Washington, DC.
Now a rolypoly ball of black-and-white fur, she spends her days
eating bamboo, climbing a tree or two, and basking in sunshine ~
and is generally oblivious to all who come to ooh-and-aah over her!
A Giant Panda she was named at the
age of 100-days as is the Chinese tradition, and will relocate to China at age four.

LING-LING and HSING-HSING

Arrived at the National Zoo in 1972 amidst great diplomatic fanfare.
At the time I was a member of FONZ [Friends of
the National Zoo] and my primary volunteer activity was to do behavioral watch with
animals.  Reflecting back, it was only the "luck of the draw", not experience or
knowledge I'm sure ~ that my assignment for over a year was to observe and note the
behavior of Ling-Ling and Hsing-Hsing as they adjusted to their new home.

  10. Ann, our mommy is so jealous. She loved Ling Ling and Hsing Hsing and used to visit them all the time. At the time, her vanity license plate was PANDAS. One winter when Mom and Dad visited, there wasn't anybody at the zoo 'cause it was super cold and snowy. The keeper at the Panda House invited them inside where they were able to see the Pandas right up close with only inches and a chain link fence between them. It was the thrill of Mom's life. Dad has been to the Chengdu Panda preserve in China. Mom's dream is to go there. Thanks for sharing. XO, Lily Olivia, Mauricio, Misty May, Giulietta, Fiona, Astrid, Lisbeth and Calista Jo
