THANKFUL and THOROUGHLY POETIC THURSDAY: State Road 23

The image chosen for today by TWO SPOILED CATS for Sam's Poetry Corner was a delightful one.  Who does not like finding produce stands while on a country drive?  Though today, we can often enjoy these garden grown treasures right in our own neighborhoods at nearby Farmer's Markets.

For me, personally, the image brought back childhood memories: rural, mid west. Bicycles on dirt roads, tree climbing.  Hide and seek in corn fields.  Swatting skeeters, hot, no air conditioning.  The TV going snowy at 11 pm and the National Anthem signing it off. Mom, Dad, brother, the lazy days of summer, growing up days ~ and my Dad's bountiful gardens!  Rich with summer delights.

My poem reflects family memories and growing up days, it is dedicated to Dad ... and is based on our real life back then, hope you enjoy it.  Remember also that today is Earth Day, let us do all we can to protect and preserve the richness, the beauty and the bounty that Mother Earth gives to us.

Thankful for my Dad.

  1. My daddy was 1913-2006 so the same era. the poem fits us perfectly but no selling of produce by me or my brother. the rest of your post i could have written. bob and I were discussig what you wrote here, just yesterday, because I paid 6.95 for a watermelon and when i told him, we discussed the cost of them back then was 50 cents each or 4 or 5 for a dollar on the stands on highway 301 or 41..

  8. That was a really nice tribute to your Dad!
My Dad also took pleasure in gardening.
It helped him forget the stresses of his job.
Playing in the dirt was his greatest pleasure.
Our Dad's were of the same era :)

  10. What a WONDERFUL poem for the Poetry Challenge....full of sweet and fun memories and special times. Glad our photo could bring that back for you (and all of us who read it!). Roadside stands are not just full of fresh food, they are overflowing with the pride of the growers who smile and enjoy sharing the bounty. That makes everything TASTE better too!! Glad you joined us - poetry is good for the heart and soul.

    Hugs, Pam and Teddy too

  12. That photo reminded Dad of being a kid again too. Many times on the weekend evenings when he was little they would all pile into the old Caddy and take a drive. There were so many stands along the roads. He misses that
