Our first walk takes us only one street over, to Cathedral Street. Here, The Baltimore Basilica, America's First Cathedral has made its home. Dedicated in 1821 it celebrated it's 200th anniversary just this past May 31, 2021. My photos show views from my apartment window and from the street. Below all images is a LINK for a virtual tour of this magnificent cathedral. On the cathedral grounds is a favorite spot of mine, the Pope John Paul II Memorial Garden. A small but peaceful spot to pause any day. Dedicated in honor of his visit to Baltimore in 1995 it features a bronze sculpture by Joseph Sheppard surrounded by sheltering trees and flowers against a beautiful mural backdrop. The entire garden is constructed in the shape of a fish, yellow and white flowers represent the papal flag and red and white blossoms represent Pope John Paul's homeland of Poland. The flowering mural holds symbols of Christianity, Islam and Judaism.
What an awesome walking tour. Baltimore sure has some fabulous architecture. Dad says he was there once many moons ago, but didn't get to take in the beauty of the city. Thanks for sharing this.
ReplyDeleteMom is loving this tour! She was born in Baltimore and remembers The Baltimore Basilica but that was many many MANY years ago and it's changed quite a bit since then. Thank you for the morning smiles, Miss Ann☺
ReplyDeleteAs we are having lovely weather many days now, am walking more often and more places ~ there will be more "tours" to come, glad you enjoyed it and hope you'll "walk with me" again. HUGS!
DeleteWhat a fun idea! Mom was in Baltimore once but just for a short time. It is fun to see other cities and what they have.
ReplyDeleteThank you for the tour! We don't know anything about Baltimore; heck, the biped has only left Canada a few times in her life. That little park IS a lovely oasis, btw. Good for the soul, amidst the bustle of the city. ♥
ReplyDeleteBeautiful photos. What a nice view from your apartment. Mom has been to Baltimore many times but not to the Basilica.

ReplyDeleteWhat fun!
we love your town... and we love the place for pope paul... it is great that even in our fast and modern time such small spots of peace exist... they are like sweet things for our soul when our eyes need a rest from our hectical days...
ReplyDeleteThat was a fun tour! Back in the 80s and 90s our Dad and Mom use to spend every other weekend in Baltimore. It was only a 3 hour drive from where they lived in WV. They always stayed at the Hyatt on the harbor.
ReplyDeleteAnn what a beautiful walk we had. We were in Baltimore many years ago ( I had a cousin who live in Olney). Love the water front. Now I have a question the lady who cuts our hair is from Maryland, near Waldorf. She pronounces Baltimore quite strangely. We say Bal-ti-more I can't quite bread down how she pronounces it but just wondering what locals say.
ReplyDeleteHugs Cecilia

ReplyDeleteThank you for showing us this amazing place, and the history of it. We've been to Baltimore a long time ago for a convention, but really didn't get to explore the city then.
