CELEBRATING . . .

 12.21 WINTER SOLSTICE

Photos remembering the winter of 1987, when we had just moved to St. Joseph, Michigan during
the week of Thanksgiving  and our new home was within walking distance of Lake Michigan.

My "poppy Vic's" reaction to all of this snow and ice was "bah humbug" (also celebrated today!)
as he, having been Florida born and raised and was initially not
too happy with the weather here, "what, shovel snow?"

On the other hand, this is also "look on the bright side day", which I did having
grown up in snowy northern Indiana and happy to be back to my roots,
near to family again and loving the snow and cold!

As for it being "short girl appreciation day", well, I'm kind of in-between, so can't
celebrate that ~ but to any and all short enough to do so ~ go for it, girls!

And remember, now the days will be lighter and brighter,
minute by minute by minute!
But to all (just about everyone) in the midst of the winter storm blanketing the US,
stay warm, indoors and safe now and in the days ahead.

  1. My reaction to all the snow and ice also is "bah humbug," and I was born and raised in a cold winter climate. LOL. I am THRILLED that after today we'll begin to see more daylight again, can't wait for Spring.

And at 5'3", I qualify for "short girl" -- I didn't even know there was an "appreciation day" for that. :-P

That storm is headed across the border and our way, starting late Thursday and into the weekend. The weather folks are predicting 30+ cm of snow (after the rain and flash freeze). I hope Santa is bringing me a snowblower. LOL.

  2. These pictures remind us that when we were younger our winners were more snowy and longer than they have been the last few years. Northern Ohio is cold enough for me. I was born and raised in southern Indiana and today's temperatures are 70 in January and february. In that incredibly crazy.

  3. Happy Winter Solstice!
We are celebrating with a drizzly day.
So different from when Mum was a young girl.
Then there was usually lots of snow.
We look forward to the lengthening days :)

  4. What fun photos! We are getting 8-10 inches of snow today and then bitter below zero cold the next couple of days. It is typical winter and we are all enjoying it. Mom loves the short days because it makes one relax. In the summer, one feels like one needs to keep going because it is light out. The dark of winter makes it cozy.

  6. Not a snow person. Can't get from A to Z with lots of snow, but many love it like you do. Great shots.

Thank you for joining the Wordless Wednesday Blog Hop.

Have a fabulous Wordless Wednesday. ♥

  7. Egads, St. Joseph!
They've already gotten plenty of snow, while those of us over on the eastside of the state are hearing so much about the upcoming storm that we don't believe it anymore.
"Show me!" is where we are at.
    Happy Yule!

  9. I have always loved the snow but most of all as a kid growing up in Maryland. It was always free and fun entertainment!

  10. Papa Vic looks like an Antarctica explorer who lost his way, and you look like you were frozen in time at the beach! Great memories, and good for sharing.

  11. Lovely memories in the snow, but it looks too cold for me. I think I must be a short girl too. I always said I was 5'4" but when they measured me at the hospital I was only 5'3". I don't know where that inch went but I don't think it will be back!

  13. Happy Winter Solstice! I'm not fond of snow and ice and cold either! Looks like we're getting the cold part of that, even where we are!

  14. Such a sweet post of wonderful memories. I grew up in the snow and cold, too, but am now understanding the draw of the warm states (not that I will leave, but I dream). All warm and safe here! Happy Holidays!

  15. I grew up in West Virginia and I'm super happy to not shovel snow every year!

  17. What fun memories! We think snow is great and all, unless we have to shovel it or trudge through it to get to work. :)

  18. Beautiful field of snow! How does one go from FL to snow? There is something so joyous about being stuck inside all cozy and warm after playing in the snow. Wonderful snow memories. I don't really. miss it yet because this nice weather year round is still new to me. But I do miss being able to take photos of snowflakes. Definitely don't miss the cold icy wind storms though! :-). Your photo header looks pawsome! xo

  19. Those pictures look a lot like our area, especially up at the shore of Lake Ontario.

  20. I actually enjoy snow this time of year (not the sub-zero temps!) and enjoy each season with all it's pluses and minuses. My first Christmas as a married person was in California and it rained. My husband had muster and I was alone. It rained and I cried. Hard to fathom Christmas without classic winter weather any more. Have a 'wagnificent' holiday. 🎄

  21. Mark's Mews: TBT: Michigan? My goodness, you sure have moved around some in your life! But Winter Solstice has been my preferred Winter Holiday. The days get longer again and I love sunlight. So do The Mews, as they get out more.

  22. 1987 was the year that Dave and I left the cold and snowy Prairies for the West Coast! Epic year for both of us my friend! Stay warm and cozy. Barb

  23. That was the year we got married, and I remember well our first winter...we had over a foot of snow, and hubby's truck parked in front of mine wouldn't start...but mine behind him did...but to no avail, the snow walls were insurmountable! So we were stuck! As soon as we could, we widened our driveway and put in block heaters, LOL!
St Joseph, MI isn't too far from us just north of Battle Creek.
I think we are going to be stuck here instead of attending Church on Christmas Morning.
I am already mostly dug out, (At least 6+ inches...), because I have to get to my work that afternoon...at least we didn't get the huge amounts closer to the lake-shore.
Merry Christmas!! We won't have to dream of a White Christmas...its for real, here!
