WEDNESDAY WORD PLAY

Kitty Korner?

Catty Corner?

Caterways, caterwise, cater (as in catering to your cat!), quatre (French) for quarters, diagonally/crosswise.
Some might suggest both are uniquely American expressions.
Here we just have a cat in a corner looking at a cat in a corner, trick photography.

Meow said one cat, you have a big belly.
Meow said the other cat, so do you.
Catty kitties, aren't they?

  2. It's always been catty corner in my vocabulary. But I always hear it kitty corner also. And it looks to me like the apartment might get a little crowded with a June and a June and a Junetoo. But crowded in a very good way. More fur to pet.

  15. That's a kittycatty corner in the picture, for sure! I always heard cattycorner in MidAtlantic country when growing up. I have a screenshot of a discussion of this on an fb page, Grammer Girl, in a computer I can't access right now. If my recall is right, someone says kitty corner is used in the Midwestern US. There's even a book called "Kitty Cornered" by Michigan author Bob Tarte. I like either expression, because, cats!

  18. It's funny how such idioms come to be, sometimes we can trace them, sometimes not, but they certainly don't translate well as much as we enjoy using them.
