GRAND
The DC metropolitan area was my home for nearly 23-years, living in northern Virginia but commuting daily across the Memorial Bridge (pre Metro days) to work downtown. Our nation's capital city has an abundance of grand and beautiful memorials to the famous, some now infamous, and amazing architecture, yet it was always inspiring to me to view the Lincoln Memorial early morning, and again in the evening, often at sunset on the drive home. It may be that the Lincoln Memorial, at the West end of the National Mall, facing the Reflecting Pool, the Washington Monument and the U.S. Capitol has been the site of more events than any other place in the city ~ concerts, demonstrations, political speeches, impromptu gatherings, official ceremonies and more.
As "grand" as the Lincoln Memorial is, did you know that within all the writings on its walls, there is a spelling error? In quoting from Lincoln's Second Inaugural Address, the stone carvers misspelled a word. Of course, attempts were made to cover up this mistake, but if you search, if you look closely, you will find it.
Authors observation: in this great city, with all its grand monuments, it's not unusual for those in positions of power (power given by our vote, others by appointment) to try to cover up their missteps. This is disingenuous at best as these actions were/are not errors of judgement but intentional and self serving.
I don't know what he means, but my dad says your last words in that last paragraph seem to be spreading like wildfire these days in that great city and everywhere.
ReplyDeleteWashington DC is a gorgeous place to visit with so much to see and do. Love the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Memorial when the cherry blossoms are in bloom!
ReplyDeleteThis monument is grand, and one of its most memorial moments, was the spanking of my 8 year old self, by my mother, on the steps below Lincoln. Beats me who would in 1952 drag a 4 and 8 year old children on a two week tour of DC and NYC... the monuments are grand, the govt not so grand these days
ReplyDeleteThere sure are lots of grand monuments to see in DC. We never knew about the spelling error.
ReplyDeleteHave always enjoyed my visits to DC, and hope to get back there soon.
ReplyDeleteOn my last visit, being at the Folger Shakespeare Library was such a gift; to see a First Folio!
My oldest son and his family just came back from visiting DC. Can't wait to see their pictures.
ReplyDeleteWe agree with Smudge's dad about the relevance of your very astute author's observation.
ReplyDeleteMy hubby and I actually went there. XO
ReplyDeleteI'm actually from the DC area, but never made it back after college. Unfortunately I never did much touring of government monuments, but spent lots of time in the Smithsonian, the National Gallery, and Rock Creek Park.
ReplyDeleteRock Creek park is a great park to explore, we hiked in there a few times...with and without our sons...
DeleteThat is super interesting. I've been there countless times yet I didn't know about the spelling error.
ReplyDeleteIt must have been interesting to live in such a fascinating spot
ReplyDeleteA most astute observation. True "public servants" do that, serve the public and have nothing to hide.
ReplyDeleteYears ago I visited D.C. and had my small Dalmatian "Alice" with me. As we started up the stairs of one of the monuments (Lincoln?) the guards stopped us and escorted us off of them, as it was No Dogs Allowed.
ReplyDeleteI've never had the pleasure of visiting the US yet, but when I get the chance then DC is the first place I'd be heading for to see the Lincoln Memorial. For the past couple of years I've been searching Ancestry to find a missing family member and recently discovered that I have some long lost relatives in the US, so hopefully one day at some point I'll be coming over and will make it a long trip to be able to meet up with a few of our blogging friends along the way too xxx
ReplyDeleteI love those monuments there.
ReplyDeleteA typo on a memorial as grand at that is so unfortunate. I can only hit my forehead with my hand. 🤦🏼♀️
