TRUDY and TOM

Yes, wild turkeys can fly.
Short distances that is, and at considerable speed.
Though they generally only do so to escape predators or to sleep safely in trees at night.
Domesticated turkeys no longer have the ability to fly, mostly due to being
overweight and kept caged as they await their ultimate fate of visiting your table.

  1. We have a Trudy that will be visiting our table in a few days. They really are very pretty birds.

  2. Wild turkeys are a big problem where Gramma lives. The travel in a big group and they enjoy hanging out at the convenience store down the road. They cause traffic jams and they even attach customers at the store. Sometimes we see some on our early morning walks when we are by the woods around our house.

  6. I like wild turkeys! I'm not a real fan of turkey meat, though, prefer chicken. At least, since our Thanksgiving was last month, there will be no danger to turkeys here! 😁

  7. This reminds me of the PBS Nature episode: My Life as a Turkey.
The turkey eggs hatch and imprint on the naturalist who raises them.

  8. Wild turkeys sure are a beautiful bird. We've had some on our property over the years, but have never managed to get a picture of them.

  10. How adorable!! The closest things we have to turkeys in our neighborhood are Quails....They also seem to only be able to fly short distances.

  11. Domesticated turkeys don't need wings to escape...all they have to do is claw you with those spurs! I know from experience. LOL Great pics, June.

  14. Be safe Trudy and Tom. I wish the White House turkeys would have been named Donald and Elon.

  15. I never knew a turkey head and face was so colorful. We had a turkey girl living outside the church where I work all spring and summer, but has disappeared. I do hope she is OK and just moved on to another place.

  16. Wild turkeys are amazing creatures. The domesticated ones, well, I'm a vegetarian for health, but I also really don't like how our animals are treated on factory farms.

  17. Love wild turkeys but no turkeys on our table Thursday. We had so many turkeys when we lived on the Tiny Ten. They weren't stupid—they hid in the trees in our North woods. No hunting on the Tiny Ten. Enjoying your photo of Trudy and Tom. We have not seen any turkeys here on the Southwest Gulf Coast.
