THE LETTER W ~ WOODIES

THE LETTER W ~ WOODIES

Clockwise from top left: the Yellow Bellied Woodpecker, the Downy Woodpecker
and the Pileated Woodpecker.  I am now an apartment dweller, but enjoyed
backyard birding when living in a home some years ago.
These woodies were among our regular visitors.
Although the Pileated Woodpecker was most often spotted high in the
large trees on the property or in the neighborhood, a few fallen logs,
flush with bugs had provided splendid meals for this one and it
spent a great deal of time feeding at this ground-station.

NATURE FRIDAY

The colors of love abound in nature.

We "revisit" photos from earlier years, backyard birdwatching elsewhere in Maryland.
Clockwise from top left: cardinal, downy woodpecker and pileated woodpecker.
It was not unusual to see the pileated woodpecker, most often high in the trees in our neighborhood.
However, this time one had come to the ground, finding a marvelous lunch in a rotting log.
The surprise came when a second pileated made it a table for two.

Below, from my years of life in Florida, the roseate spoonbill,
photographed at the Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge.

NATIONAL BIRD DAY plus ONE SPECIAL SQUAWKER

These photo groupings reflect my love of bird watching ~ and are chosen from my photo files, all previously published on this blog.  Birding is something I've not done in recent months as living in the heart of downtown, high up in a 16th floor apartment, birds are not a common sight.  Oh, an occasional migrating flock may pass by, but that's only a rare pleasure, not to be photographed.

The first two montages below are from the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, located between the Atlantic Ocean and the Indian River, north of the Kennedy Space Center.  Merritt Island and Cocoa, Florida were my home for over 20 years. Driving, biking or walking along Blackpoint Drive in the refuge, one sees all kinds of water birds and whether at dawn, midday or twilight, different species will be out to hunt for fish in the ever changing waterways shallow or deep.  It is a beautiful and natural place, never quite the same, worth visiting over and over.  By the way, there are an abundance of "wingless critters" in the waters as well, so when you walk, do so with caution and shoes on.

Before moving into my current apartment, I lived with family elsewhere in Maryland  and we all enjoyed "backyard birding" (well, front yard, too).  The feeding stations were filled from October through late March, encouraging all the birds to seek food from nature's bounty in the warmer months, though many would squawk at this and hang around for weeks after.  And yes, there was always the inevitable battle with the squirrels (or as Chester would say, the evil squirrel cartel!), and often they came out on top.  The top of the feeders, we mean!

The two montages below are photographs from those many days, of all the visitors.  Every one a delight to see.  Especially perhaps the hawk who spent maybe an hour, happily lunching up high, undisturbed, and I was able to get an entire series of photos of him.  And the pileated woodpeckers, not one but two, feasting on some old ant-filled dying logs found in the back of the yard.  As majestic as both of these birds are, my favorite was always the little "downy", patient and shy, always waiting his turn, until the bigger boys had their fill and flew away.

And not to forget one very special bird, our very own Kismet.
Even though Kismet has not been able to post recently due to technical blogging issues ~
I'm quite sure you've noticed that she often shows up as a visitor on your blog leaving her amusing squawks!
So, let's all return the "favor" and drop a few sunflower seeds for her today, squawk back at either of the links below!

CATURDAY ART ~ FOR THE BIRDS

From time to time, Adobe Creative Cloud adds new features to the program, so a whole new learning process begins (when I'm barely 5% good with the existing program)!  Trying first with photos of June, and not at all happy with the results, I went back to some old birding photos ... again, the results are first-time-efforts, and there's a long way to go to be able to work well with these filters, but a challenge is always good, and fun, so we'll keep trying.  Maybe soon graduating to kitty June!

A SUNDAY SELFIE ~ SORT OF

At least we can still enjoy our backyard bird watching during these unusual days.
And a few days ago we were treated with seeing these pileated woodpeckers
busy at an old woodpile in the back-forty.
It's rare enough to see one of them, but a pair ... wow!

Please check back in at Zoolatry on Tuesday or Wednesday,
hoping to post all the April Events Badges!

WILD BIRD WEDNESDAY

RED TAIL HAWK

Birding is fairly new to me, and has mostly been done in my own "backyard" and while vacationing in Florida.  Though I would love to expand that environment and certainly hope to do so ... my camera is fairly simple and I've found that my cell is not good at all for capturing bird images ... so it was mostly luck that allowed me to photograph this Red Tail Hawk.  He [she] was lunching on prey, not far up in one of the old trees in our back yard and had the hawk not chosen to stay in place for quite some length of time, I'd never have been able to photograph him.  Looking closely, one can see his prey clutched in his claws; it appears to be a small bird.

HAPPY TUESDAY . . . Tweet, Tweet

The American Finch

Although our bird feeding station is set up in our backyard, one feeder hangs from a small tree outside the front window.  This seed is meant to attract mostly the various finches, though enjoyed by a few hungry squirrels.  It is positioned so one can relax in a living room chair, close to the window and do nothing but "bird watch" ~ up close and personal!  These photos were taken through the glass and it surprised me that they came out as clear and crisp as they did.  I've found that bird watching, whether here through the window, or off the deck in the backyard is a wonderful pastime. It is a stress reliever, almost meditative and quiet except for their singing and chatter.  In time one learns to recognize their songs, identify them and  understand their activities and behavior and interaction with one another.  It makes me happy . . .

HAPPY TUESDAY ~ FLYING HIGH

Watching and photographing (and quietly listening to) our backyard birds is one of my favorite pastimes.  And I love to look for new bird sightings when out and about in new places.  With photoshop, I enjoy "framing" the images to enhance them in some small way.  Here, revisiting a few of my favorites, each re-framed for today's posting.  Birds make me happy (yes, and you too make me happy, Kismet ... so I will look for your witty remark today, as I do every day!) ... so Happy Tuesday, one and all.

OUR PHOTO BOMBING BIRD [Guess Who?]

There I was, working on a post, just resizing a couple of old profile photos of Dougie that I liked ~ planning to post them for Awww Monday.  I swear I only left the laptop for a few minutes, just off to the kitchen to get a diet Coke ... and when I returned ... OhMySquAAAaaaaaWK!

How did our Blue Buddy fly so far?  West coast to East, so fast?  It's the Cuttlebone Cutie!  The Whimsical Winged One!  Somehow, someway, this little Orotund Orator who is usually and frequently found in the "comment section" of our blog ... with her witty and feather-tickling remarks .... well, she had flown right up into DD's photos, and all we can say to that, is AWWW, KISMET!

WORLD PARROT DAY ~ with KISMET and More

Although we have no birds in our home, setting up a backyard feeding station for our neighborhood birds a couple of years ago was one of the best things we've ever done.  We've seen, and heard so many different species that otherwise would have remained hidden in the trees, never to be enjoyed up close!  Now we watch them feed and bathe, interact with one another, gather twigs and debris for nesting.  They are fascinating, colorful, a joy to watch.  And if you happen to be an early riser, as I am, there is nothing better that to sit outside at dawn ~ the sun begins to rise on a new day, and a symphony surrounds you.  It is calming, meditative and more.  It is truly a good way to begin the day.
The photos above represent just a few of our visitors over the last year.
Our feeding station is closed now, for spring and summer, as it is our belief that our feathered friends should not become totally dependent on us, but during these months should return to finding the foods that Mother Nature generously provides for them.
We'll return to feeding them come late fall and winter.  And I am quite sure, they will return to us as well.

Today is WORLD PARROT DAY ... and we're celebrating our friend KISMET ... be sure to visit and say "hi ... hello ... squaaaawk" ... here's the linky ... VISIT KISMET HERE

We've seen parrots, at the Zoo, of course!  Not sure if that counts, but we're going to share here some "flashback photos" ... of wee-little-parrots called Rainbow Lorikeets.  When we lived in Florida, frequent visits were made to the Brevard Zoo in Melbourne, FL and a stop at the bird enclosure was always a must ... to feed and interact with these colorful flyers!  Happy Parrot Day!

SUNDAY SELFIE with our Guest Kismet and a Grandma Note

Whatever you might have to squaaaaawk about our beautiful birdie friends,
say it and share it on Friday, May 31!
Below, two badges (one post size, one sidebar size) to show you're taking part!

Dougie Dog here ~ just saying I haven't seen any of those exotic birds, you know, the
Flying Wilson's the last few days, but that's OK ~ but I did want to let
my friends know that my Grandma Ann is home from hospital, her "bad wing" is starting
to heal.  She says it's still a big hurty, but she's wandering all over with her walker
and doing her exercises like they told her to do ~ so, well, Good Girl, Grandma!

HAPPY TUESDAY ~ 'DA BIRDS

Did you hear that property values are going up in our neighborhood?  New housing here, there, everywhere.  Just the other day a builder was busy under the deck in the backyard.  Great construction, solid, will withstand all those windy days and protected from rain, too!  Then, why it was only a week later ... along came another contractor, building a second home ... only she (yes, it's a new age, we have female builders, folks, get used to it!) chose to build way back in a corner and this "realtor" could not get a good photograph for the sales brochure.  Well, we know a family has moved into the first house already.  And their "mom" is busy there, day in and out ... though we haven't been able to visit with a "welcome new neighbor" gift.  If we venture near, she seems to prefer to fly off to do errands or something, it seems we startle her a bit, maybe she is shy ... as for the second home, it's just hard to see if the family has moved in ... but there has been a little activity and shuffling about.  Anyway, I suspect we'll know soon.  Likely we'll "hear" something.  You know how young kids are, they're always noisy ... especially when they're hungry.  And then when they get ready to leave the nest, so to speak, go out and play ... well, there will be a real ruckus then!  Since we couldn't get a real family photo to share with you today, we've added a "virtual image" so you have an idea of who has moved in ~ sweet, aren't they?

Speakin' of da birds!

Meet KISMET from the blog KYLASCOTT!

THANKFUL THURSDAY ~ WOODY

At the farthest away corner of our backyard there is a small semi-circle, edged by old logs.  In that untended area is a log pile, leftover leaves for mulching and the compost bins. Near winters end, we'd noticed a couple logs beginning to decay and thought to soon replace them.
Not now!
Those who visit Zoolatry know we are avid backyard-bird watchers ... and last Sunday morning we had a rare and exciting treat observing a Pileated Woodpecker enjoying breakfast for nearly a half-hour at those old decaying logs.
The Pileated is among the larger woodpeckers, averaging 15-16" in size.  This is a male, as defined by his red mustache (the female has a white one).  Though we have seen him from time to time in our tree tops, this was the closest he had come ~ though the photos remain a bit grainy as he was still shot from a distance.
The old decaying logs will stay awhile longer ...

Thankful for all the birds that visit our yard
and enhance our lives with their songs and their beauty!

AWWW MONDAY ~ TWEET, TWEET

More signs of Spring ~ more birdies arriving!
Here, pretty little Purple Finches ... though misnamed as they are rosy-red in color.
Little tweeters, only about 5" long ... breakfasting at our feeder.

Below: of course I couldn't resist taking one of the photos (top right in the montage) and getting "artsy" with it ...

It's AWWW Monday and when I sit on the deck watching all these guys
(and yes, these very colorful little ones are males) I do go ... "awww" ...
I find myself relieved of stress and slowly moving away from any worries of the world ...
