ART GALLERY, July 31

Hi!  Aww (Happy) Monday ~ and believe me, I am happy today.
So, so meowing out loud happy!
I'm already meowing "tomorrow, tomorrow ... "
cause yes, I get my bloggie back, mine, all mine!
No more retrospective rambling.  No more flashback foolishness.
No more walks down memory lane.

"Tomorrow!  Tomorrow!
I love ya tomorrow!
You're only a day away!
Meeoow!"

ART GALLERY, July 30 "How Many, How Much"

Today, as we near the end of July we also coming to the end of our retrospective, of the wandering through my art gallery ~ my walk down memory lane.

Today is also the International Day of Friendship ~ so very appropriate as this month of looking back over years and years has refreshed my memory of so very much shared and the friends made through this little blog.

You ~ the beautiful people who have come into and become an important part of my life.  You ~ lasting friendships.  You ~ people who have made it better.  You ~ who have shared good times and hard times, with smiles, with caring.  You ~ who have shared your love of pets, a special bond between us.  You ~ for whom I give thanks each and every day.

This little poem by one of our favorite authors, ends by asking:
"How much love inside a friend?  Depends on how much you give 'em."
I hope we've given you good measure for you have given us much.

HOW MANY, HOW MUCH

How many slams in an old screen door?
Depends on how loud you shut it.
How many slices in a bread?
Depends on how thin you cut it.
How much good inside a day?
Depends on how much you live 'em.
How much love inside a friend?
Depends on how much you give 'em.

HOW MANY, HOW MUCH.  Written and illustrated by Shel Silverstein.  Published 1981.  A Light In The Attic.  Harper Collins Publishers.

Purrs, two little kitties, they lived by the sea.
They romped and rollicked throughout their days in a Land called Zoolatry.

Friends would come to visit.  Their pictures all could see,
and read the stories of their glories they shared with you and me.

Purrs, two little kitties, they lived by the sea.
They played and preened throughout their days in a Land called Zoolatry.
Together they would travel, to places far and wide,
to visit friends, meow hello, their human by their side.

Purrs, two little kitties, they lived by the sea.
Sometimes they hissed and furs would fly
in that Land called Zoolatry.

Purrs, two little kitties, who lived by the sea,
they loved their blog, they loved their friends
in the Land called Zoolatry.

But even little kitties know that life doesn't stay the same.
Soon they'd travel far and wide to new places,
new homes, there was no one to blame.

They'd leave behind the palm trees,
the sun so bright, the sea,
to soon discover autumn leaves
and snowflakes falling free.

Purrs, two little kitties, who once lived by the sea,
will now live happily ever after in a new
Land called Zoolatry.

Yes, still called Zoolatry.

Based on the song lyrics  ~ PUFF, THE MAGIC DRAGON, recorded in 1963 by Peter, Paul and Mary.
Music and lyrics by Leonard Lipton and Peter Yarrow, from a poem written by Leonard Lipton in 1959 ©

September 2012 through the following September was a time of great change for me, for my family.  In mid June of 2013, a major move took place traveling from south to north, Florida to Maryland.  Maggy and Zoey, the two little kitties of the Land of Zoolatry, though also moving, did not join me on my journey ~ each living happily ever after, for many years in their respective new homes, with new pet parents and fur-siblings.  During this transition, the Zoolatry blog went silent for a time.  This blog header and poem were published during the time we were offline.

I was so thankful for ~ and loved my many years of living with granddog, Dougie Dog.
Smart, full of energy and ready to play, yet so good, so gentle, so handsome.

Above ~ deck time with Dougie Dog ~ or just bits of him, as he was always anxious
to head down to the big back yard for "toss and catch with his wilson".

Below ~ some of those times when he was enjoying a
bit of calm and quiet time.

I'm always happy and thankful that when I visit, he remembers me with
the typical Lab-lean-love and lots of slobbery kisses.

All images from 2017 and 2018.

 ~ WALK WITH ME ~

Throughout 2020 and into 2022, we published a random series of posts under the label "Walk With Me".  As a newcomer to the city of Baltimore, I was learning about my new home, all it had to offer ~ and exploring (as best one could do during a pandemic!).  I found beauty, old and new. Culture, great museums, history and architecture, hidden neighborhoods both ethnic and vibrant, things unexpected and all offering so much to resident and visitor alike.  For years, this city has received what one would call "bad press", portrayed harshly in movies and television series, and like most cities even today, it does face huge social/economic/political problems ~ but my hope was that the "Walk With Me" series would show a different side, the good side, for it is here.

This year, 2023, I've not been able to enjoy as many walkabouts, nearby or in farther reaches of town.  First a fractured ankle put me down temporarily, and now a torn meniscus is taking its time to heal ~ and as with many of you, our spring into summer has had an excessive number of hot, humid or stormy days, and others with orange-to-red smoke filled skies.  None of this is very conducive to being a walker ... but I am hopeful for the time to come soon when each week will find me walking-about.

Here, a few images ~ all within blocks of where I now live, the Mount Vernon Cultural District.

Garrett Jacobs, restored mansion, now a private foundation.
Lobby, entrance.

Grand Entrances
Pratt Library, Cathedral Street.  Side entrance to the The Walters Museum, Charles Street.
Hackerman House.  Private foundation/business, restored home.  Both, Mt. Vernon Square.

Holidays at night, Mount Vernon Square.
Baltimore's own "Washington Monument".  And photographed from Charles Street side of The Walters Museum.

My Sister's Garden
Outdoor art, Centre Street.

The Pope John Paul II Garden, Charles Street.

NIPPER

The original RCA pupper, sitting atop the Maryland Center for History and Culture, Centre Street.
When I first moved here, NIPPER dutifully wore a "mask".
Now, thankfully when I walk by and bark hello to him, he is mask-less!

Anonymous

Don't walk behind me, I may not lead.
Don't walk in front of me, I may not follow.
Just walk beside me and be my friend.

Should any reader be interested in more images and descriptions for each of these special places, feel free to scroll down on our sidebar to Wandering Around Zoolatry and click on WALK WITH ME for all labeled posts in this category.  Thank you.

Going back, way way back ~ as best I remember pre-2010, I had a companion blog to Zoolatry ~ titled My Mind's Eye, Zoolatry II.  There's no recall as to just when it began, or when it was officially closed.  But while open and posting, it was devoted exclusively to family images, and to images where I'd "practice, learn and use" Adobe Photoshop tools to alter original photographs.

The ones shown here are among my favorites, the technique generally to convert the photograph to black-and-white and then to "paint" it with color.  Trying to achieve the impression of soft pastels or watercolors.  Only the first picture, and last diverge from this somewhat by use of more vivid colors.

My Mind's Eye.  Today, 2023, publishes under the creative imagination
of our special and dear friends ~ Madi and Mom.

Once upon a time in Florida, summer 2013 ~ my home had been sold, plans made to move North.  Sadly, Maggy and Zoey would not make the move with me.  Each would be going to new ~ but wonderful and loving homes.

So many stories could be told about the years that followed ~ Zoey's amazing times until she crossed her Rainbow Bridge in April of 2020, but here we'll just share a little about Zo and her "best brother, Pip".

And though Zoey now lives in our hearts and memories, it is with smiles and love that we can say that handsome Pip is still with us, living the good life ... a "snow-cat", wintering in Florida and spending his summers here in Maryland.  Below, Pip and Zoey, and just a few of their times together.

Mommy Dee better pack up the RV ~ time to head south for the winter!

ZOOLATRY becomes BOOLATRY

October!  Second only to the holiday season for being our favorite time of year for blogging and absolutely for "playing" with photoshop!  Every year, for more that we can count, Zoolatry turns into BOOLATRY for the month and we do our best to get silly or sweet, scary or sensational ~ taking our own pet photos and going into Meow-O-Ween and Bark-O-Ween mode.

And it's a month when we reach out to our pet blogging friends hoping many will want to play along ~ and volunteer their images for whatever we may come up with, wherever imagination takes us.

The collection of masked kitties shared here goes back sixteen years ~ all the way to October 2007.  To the best of my knowledge, most of these dear friends have crossed their Rainbow Bridges, but once upon a time we enjoyed our times together.

Happy note: we are blessed and thankful that ERNIE of THE ISLAND CATS
shares his days and his stories with us still...and that's the way it's s'posed to be.

Tomorrow, Boolatry friends from 2018 will be here doing
a little tricking and treating, stop by if you have time.

THE DOG DAYS OF SUMMER . . .

are supposed to arrive during August.
But for most of us ~ north, south, east and definitely west ~
they are already here!  And it seems here to stay!
So, how about we spend the day with a few of our barking buddies,
sharing again some photos from our archives.

We've added LINKS to each of their blogs below, just in case you'd
like to paw over and woof or meow.
Just CLICK on a name, grab a leash and go visit!

CHEWY & FIONA and little XANDER are my Florida grand-pups, they don't
have a blog ~ but I do know they all show up a lot here, and on FB and IG!

Today, OUR RAINBOW FRIENDS posts in memory of those who crossed their Rainbow Bridge last month.  We hope you will be able to visit and leave your kind words for the families left behind.  Though we often share the thought that our blogging should be "blogging without obligation", somehow it seems ~ or feels ~ that an obligation or responsibility to pay our respects to friends lost is incumbent on each of us.

Our Rainbow Friends has published every month, consistently since January of 2012 remembering over one-thousand of our beloved pets.  It was created by, with image presentation by Linda C., of the blog DaWeenies of Florida and we thank her for her loving work.  In January of 2023, Carol M., of the blog A Shutterbug Explores designed the beautiful and original art which is now featured as the header and badge representing this blog. When you visit, please consider adding the badge to your own blog.

Pets who have crossed the Rainbow Bridge can be visited at any time ~ whether they left in recent months or past years.  This is intended as a permanent resting site for them, for you ~ thank you for caring.

NO MEOWING ~ NO BARKING

Although there's little question that cats and dogs have filled the pages of this blog for most of its for years, "zoolatry" is defined in this way: 1) the worship of animals, and 2) extreme or excessive devotion to animals (especially pets).  It derives from the Greek word zoon for animal, and the Latin word latria, for worship.

Given the chance, I've always enjoyed photographing all ~ any animal, and given a second chance, taken the opportunity to work with that image in photoshop.  Here, from our archives, assembling some old favorites into montages.

AT THE ZOO

Photographs originally taken at the Smithsonian National Zoo, Washington, DC

DOWN ON THE FARM

Photographs from a visit to a rural Maryland farm and petting zoo for children.

BACKYARD BIRDING

At one time, living with family and my then young grandson,
together we enjoyed backyard birdwatching throughout the year.
