 Halloween Haunting 2023

As many know, our Halloween Haunting poem has published here for many years ~ first appearing in 2007.  Over these years it has been rewritten to reflect the pets that filled our lives at the time ~ Maggy and Zoey, and Dougie Dog.  It also changed ever so slightly as we changed from living in the South and returned to the North ~ what has not changed is our hope to share and show the fun our pets might have if they too were to go out to trick-or-treat on Halloween night!  
To those who may venture forth, keep your pets close, keep little ones close, keep a watchful eye all 'round ... peek out before opening your doors, and above all, return home well and safe.

THE COSTUME CLOSET, Part 2 ~ June's Choice

So, yesterday ~ ~ ~

In my Costume Closet I explored,
pawing here, pawing there, 

it was a thorough look-see,
as I was trying so very hard 

to decide what-or-who I would be.

The costumes were pretty, the choices were many,

but none tickled my whiskers,

said "oh dear, mine Mommy, I just can't choose any!"

So I sat by the window, watching birdies fly by,

looking out and upward at puffed clouds, blue sky.

And then all of a sudden it became so clear,

[and I heard mine Mommy from somewhere whispering, oh yes, little dear] 

I knew just who I should be!

I just wanna be me!

SUNDAY SELFIES ~ from the COSTUME CLOSET

My friends, Xena, Lucy, Chia and Riley [woof, woof, visit them here] happened to mention that I "didn't do costumes" ~ but, oh, I do ... I do.  Or let's say mine Mommy makes me do costumes.  So yesterday, she says "time to check your costume closet, choose what you'll wear for Meow-O-Ween".  
But, here's the thing, key word being 'do'. Never, and I do mean NEVER will I allow any article of clothing to touch my furs so these costumes, ears-to-paw, are only make believe, pretend, imaginary ... just the same, with Meow-O-Ween only a few treats away, I invite you on a tour of my Costume Closet, will you help me choose what to be, what to wear ...

I could be a Li'l Devil, or a Witchy Witch,

maybe Velma with Scooby Doo!

I do love Raggedy Ann, so very special, she really was.

And yes, I loved my sparkling golden ears,

and I did briefly appear as Barbie to very loud applause!

We can't forget cute Baby Yoda,

whose real name is Grogu.

Just wondering is it paws up or paws down for

Bob Ross,

Woody,

or Toad

and which one would you choose if it was you?

What to do, who to be,

it's a dilemma for me.

But if you can stop by tomorrow, my choice I promise you'll see ...

BOOLATRY does CATURDAY

the woods are lovely dark so deep

I wander through, half dream, half sleep

how did I dare, I did not care

no fear had I 

of blackened sky 

of screeches, screams

yes, just a dream

for I was close at mine Mommy's knee

warm and safe, reality

BOOLATRY BOO-BACK

Zoolatry morphs into Boolatry somewhere after midnight 
on the thirtieth of September of each year, 
the year it began now lost to history (or short term memory),

only to fade away, as ephemeral as the spirits of the night before,

as All Hallows' Day awakens.

Well, we do gots those old files and the cloud, meow, so we knows

what we did when and wif who, right, meow, says June the Cat,

so, let's BooBack ... here's Miss Mags and ZoZo and Dougie Dog,

once upon a Boolatry!  And, me and mine Mommy, too!

THE CAT

I think I'll be a cat for Meow-O-Ween.
Is that a good choice?

BOO. BOO-HOO.

 

Yeah, yeah.  Juney girl, you are not always known for truth-telling, at least not the whole truth and nothing but the truth!  So, I'll add a little clarification here.  What?  Hey, don't swat me.  Fair is fair, it's only right that our furriends know both sides of the story.  Yeah, am about to drive away, and yeah, sweetie, you'll be alone.  But, a good friend 'n' neighbor will be coming in to feed and water you ... mmm, yes, I know you'll jump to the top of the kitchen cabinets when you hear her arrive.  But, never fear, she's super nice.  And we'll leave a little light on and the windows open for birdie-watching.  Mr. Gene has assured me the hallways have been swept free of any and all monsters or things that go bump in the night.  You've lots of soft, snuggly spots to sleep at night and sleep most the day (which you do a lot of anyway) ... so, attack when I'm back? 

I think not.  I think we'll curl up together in our your polka dot chair for some sweet cuddle time and some brushies and you'll purr and I'll purr and we'll both be happy to be together again and meow bye-bye-boo-hoo's.  Yeah, maybe, mine Mommy.

JUNE SPEAK vs MOM SPEAK

I love to escape for be allowed to walk our hallway.  It's good exercise of course.  I might come across a friendly neighbor with a treat in paw.  One never can be sure when a tasty little critter may crawl out from under the trash-room door!  And it's always fun to chat with the ellybator-lady when I hear her go ding-ding ... [June Speak]

OK, OK ~ do you all want the truth, the whole truth?  Yes, the kitty girl, the JuneBug does sometimes "escape" and is once in awhile "allowed" under supervision.  I'll agree you do get a bit of exercise.  BUT: see a neighbor and tail held high, you do a mad dash home, the scaredy cat that you are.  AND: Mr Gene keeps the trash-room so pristine, you'll never find a crawling critter there, dream on little cat!  THAT DING-DING: ohmycat, even when you're inside your apartment and hear her, you hide in the closet ... [Mom Speak]

 Mine Mommy allowed me a little break and rest from all the Boolatry Make-Believe today,

but I thought mebbe JuneToo would like to show off her costume.

So she agreed to be my "selfie stand-in".

No ghosts here, sweetie.  But then, it is Friday the 13th . . .

MY NEW FRIEND

I really like spending a little time with my new friend in the evenings ~ 
that time when mine Mommy seems a bit busy with wrapping up her day.
He's quiet. He doesn't ask for much.  He's not the softest of cuddlers.

And yet he's really very good company, so I'm thankful for him.

THE 'OTHERS'

 When the day bed becomes the night bed, I like to curl up next to mine Mommy.

And when it gets darker,
and things go bump in the night
and it's that time when the 'others' appear,
I'm really glad I'm curled up next to mine Mommy.

HAPPY "BOOLATRY" TUESDAY

So, I was pawing through all the Meow-O-Ween costumes in my closet,

and even though I've only celebrated three years of trick 'n' treat times, I have

many more costumes than "three" ... when suddenly mine Mommy yelled at me from t'other room ... 

"wear my favorite today for Happy Tuesday, it'd make me so happy!"

So I am, so I hope she is happy.

And my angel sister Zoey even wore an-almost-look-alike costume once upon another Boolatry!  Wasn't she cute?

And let me share a little secret with you about why this is a favorite.  This secret goes way, way back ... long before me, long before Zoey.  Mine Mommy was not a bazillion years old like she is now, and she was going to have her "first litter" (well, maybe not a litter, maybe just one) ... and she had always loved Raggedy Ann and Andy since she'd been a little-kit-kid herself ... so that was how she decorated the room for the new family member to be.  That kit turned out to be a girl, so Raggedy Ann took over ... but OMC ... about a year later ... guess what, Raggedy Andy moved into that room because another little-kit-kid arrived (sort of unexpectedly you might say) and you guessed it, it was a boy this time.  And just to finish up the story ... for the next bazillion years ... a Raggedy Ann puppet sat atop the Christmas tree in their home ... and so, yes ... it's a favorite, fur sure.
