BLACK CAT APPRECIATION DAY

Though I have never been owned by a black cat ... I do enjoy daily life with a "black dog" who is wonderful and amazing in every possible way.  And many years ago, during another life in Florida (the years 2010 through 2012) at our home there, we tended several feral families of mostly black cats ... the mother Annie, her little ones Bravo, Charlie and Delta Dawn and about the same time, along came Annie's friend Carlacita and her brood of black kitties and tuxies.  They lived on our porch, sleeping, eating and playing there ... and romped about the backyard, often sunning themselves around the barbecue.  Over time we were able to catch and release (TNR) the kittens, though never successfully the mother cats.  At the time, life didn't allow us to bring any of them into our home ... but we loved and enjoyed them all ... and still, in my mind ... Black Cats Are Great!

NOW WE ARE SEVEN

Now we are seven ~ Maggy and Zoey ~ plus Cita, our "porch kitty" and her four babies.
It's now a regular thing, everyone here for breakfast, everyone here for dinner ...
often returning seeking a bedtime snack!
Three of the kits still scamper away when the door is opened.  Not Cita though ... she now
hisses madly at me (protecting her young, no doubt, as this is not her normal behavior).
And not Smiley ... Smiley, the brave and the bold!
Zoey watches the "porch kitty family" at breakfast time.
Someone watches back ... not sure who.
I open the door, hopefully to photo them all ... but no!
It's run, run, run away.

Except for Smiley!

SPOOKY (and Smiley) SATURDAY

 Maggy does Spooky Saturday.

Introducing the first (the boldest and bravest) of Cita's new kits ...
we're naming (him or her) Smiley.  The tuxie markings
seem to have created a permanent smile!

TUXIE TUESDAY

Many of you have met our purrty Carlacita before ... now mostly called Cita.
She is our feral tuxie girl, who has been with us between three-and-four years.
Early efforts for TNR always failed and over time we gave up trying, so Cita has had several
litters.  It was mostly Vic's job to provide her meals at breakfast and dinnertime.
His office area overlooks the front porch, and Cita would hop up onto the window
ledge, whine or paw at the window to remind him.
In August, he was in hospital two different times.  When he came home from the second
hospital stay on August 17, he asked if I'd remembered to feed Cita each day.
I assured him I had, but told him she'd been gone now for maybe three days, and
reminded him that her belly had been large once again.

I made note of her time "away" on my calendar, guessing that some kits were
on the way and that perhaps by mid-October I'd have the fun of seeing them.
So mid-week last, while sitting on the back porch enjoying the evening breeze, what did
I see but all kinds of  "activity" along the edge of the woods.  Suddenly, a little bitty tuxie
appeared, then another and in a few moments two more kits, both grey and white.
What a joy they are for me.
We now have a full crew to feed, though they scamper away when I bring their
meals out ... so this photo is taken through window glass and screen.
But, oh yes ... what a joy they are to see, Vic would have so enjoyed them.

EASY LIKE SUNDAY vs NOT SO EASY SATURDAY NIGHT

Mommy Carlacita waits and watches at the end of the porch, before
calling her kitties to dinner.  Even after she thinks the coast is clear, she
looks over her shoulder ... there at the edge of the woods,
that's who she's keeping a watchful eye on.  (Me, too...)
And he usually comes to clean-up any scraps left behind ... in spite
of my banging on windows, shouting, slamming doors or shaking a broom
at him.  Sigh.  Guess he needs a little food, too.

GUEST BLOGGER, DAY 4

Today is the last day for our visiting Guest Blogger.
Today is also Wordy Wednesday.
Here is our little feral kitty, once upon a time called DESI.
And if you're curious like a cat about "how he got his name" ~ his new name, YODA...
all you have to do is look closely at his marvelous ears
and scroll thru all three photos below.

GUEST BLOGGER, DAY 3

It's Tuxie Tuesday ~ here's Lacey on the front porch, enjoying
the cat tree Maggy and Zoey "donated".
And here she is through the window.
Guess who's coming to dinner?  Lacey brought a friend one evening!
On our airboat ride through the St. Johns we saw a "friend" we
hope Lacey NEVER brings to dinner!
An Ais Indian Burial Mound in the St. Johns wetlands.
A protected area, the Ais Indians settled this area long before the Seminole.
And lest you think you'd find artifacts, bones or such here ~ the "burial mound"
was where the Indians traveled to, by canoe, to dispose of
waste and garbage.  It was "buried" there.

Photos by Isabel (all but one, of course).
Tomorrow: the last day for our Guest Blogger.
Learn how and why Desi was renamed Yoda.

GUEST BLOGGER

For the next few days, Zoolatry will be hosted by a very special "guest blogger".  My beautiful, amazing, super sweet and very smart granddaughter Isabel spent last week with us.  She fell in love with our "feral family" and I think she loaded Gramma's computer with about 200 new pictures!  With her steady hands and sharp eyes (and good heart) she captured them all "at their best".  So for the next few days, we hope you'll enjoy her photos.  And by the way, she renamed the little ones ~ they are now officially Lacey and Yoda.  We start today with one of her "photoshop" collages (yes, Gramma has been teaching her photoshop...).

FRIENDS FRIDAY ~ FERAL FAMILY

The Zoolatry Family took a vote ~ results were "2 for and 2 against".
Being as the "2 for" votes were from the adults in the family,
their votes were weighted accordingly.  Why were we voting?
Well, the suggestion was made that Maggy and Zoey "give up" one of their
cat trees ~ that they "donate" it to Carlacita and her two babies.
We've "named" the babies ~ Lucy and Desi.  One is a tuxie like Mom,
and the other all black like their Dad.
As seen here, they appreciated the gift!  And there are assorted toys just
out of sight that are being equally appreciated.

FRIENDS FRIDAY

Say hello to BLUTO!
This is BLUTO!  The newest member of Our Feral Cat family.  Almost named him (or her?)
PopEye, but that didn't seem to fit ~ then remembered the character Bluto, the big, chunky one
and that did seem to fit.  He's big, chubby, fluffy, white with wonderful black and charcoal markings
and a huge puffed up tail!  Extremely shy.
At first, Porch Kitty & her kids (Smokey and Carlacita)
did not welcome him at all to the feeding station.  Now they've accepted his presence.  Though
he is either timid or polite in that he waits, a bit to the side, until they have finished.
Bluto is obviously a feral as you can see from the tipped left ear.
Since our post on the ferals last October (see the link below), only PK and her two kids
remain; the others came and went as they so often do.  We were pleased when during our recent
cold spell, they would come into the garage at night and sleep in a box cozied up on one
of our Peggy Blankies.  Perhaps sometime in the future, we can TNR, but until then
we feed and nourish them as best we can.  And we enjoy them!

NATIONAL FERAL CAT DAY

Meet Smokey and Carlacita (we are guessing on the "he" and "she" here)... just two of our 2010 feral family.  It all began last spring, when Porch Kitty, a/k/a PK, came to us ~ full of her kits waiting to be born.  Soon, the day came when PK and five little ones were regular visitors for meal times, naps on the porch and playtime in the front garden.  Now, in October 2010, this group has lost some, gained others.  Three of the kittens have moved on.  PK still comes, though does not interact with her young now, and may be pregnant once again. Then there is Grandpa, a chubby, somewhat tattered old grey-and-white cat, with ears that make us think of Scottish Fold cats.  And Tiger, a young and very healthy looking, wonderfully handsome cat with stripes of many colors; perhaps abandoned rather than feral from the look of him.  And Dad, although there may be two we call Dad ~ nearly identical pure black cats we cannot tell apart, and think fathered the original litter.  Getting a photo or two of any of them is very difficult as all are shy and skittish, in spite of our efforts to befriend and welcome them all.  Right now, we have neither time nor resources to manage TNR for this group, but hopefully we can keep them healthy, content and safe as we continue to feed, care for and enjoy them.
Our first feral family arrived in 2008: click here to read their story... the story of Annie, Bravo, Charlie and Delta Dawn... to this day, we miss them all, very much.  Photographs of all of our feral cats can be seen by visiting OUR FERAL FAMILY, located under Who's Who On Zoolatry on our sidebar.

PHOTO HUNT: SIX

Today's Photo Hunt is "Six" and seemed the appropriate time to reintroduce our feral family of "six"... center in the photo is PK (originally known as Porch Kitty) and her little PKs... a Parade of Kits, all five of them.  As I was doing this post, the "parade" marched by my window, coming from the back yard to the front porch for their evening supper.  Their home appears to be in the woods of our backyard.  Daytime they are often playing all 'round the barbecue, so we now keep a water dish out there for them.  One evening recently I removed the screen from the bedroom window so I could stick the camera out and get a few photos of them.  Though the parade winds up on the front porch early a.m., and each evening around dusk, no photos are allowed... all are too shy, too skittish to allow us near.

INTRODUCING: PK

We're pleased to introduce PK.
Here she is with two of her five kitties.
PK and family live in the woods at the edge of our back yard.
They come out to play in the evenings.  They come to our porch
for breakfast, treats and dinnertime.
All are very hesitant, and so far, we've been unable to
get any photographs except these two taken
through the window.

FERALS and FRIENDS

It's been a year now since LBSKG (little black stray kitty girl)
arrived on our doorstep, soon to be named ANNIE
and soon to be joined by her little ones,
BRAVO, CHARLIE and DELTA.
We miss them all ~ for those not familiar with their story,
on our sidebar, under Zoolatry Zoo, just click on
Our Feral Family to view or read the postings.
Photos above are Charlie ~ Happy 1st Birthday Charlie.
(who turned out to be Charlotte, not Charles).

THANKFUL THURSDAY ~ THE END OF THE STORY

For all who know the story of Our Feral Family, we post here what we believe is the end of the story. For those who are not familiar with the story, but would like to read about our ferals, please go to the sidebar, under Zoolatry Zoo, and click on "Our Feral Family" for earlier photos and postings.
The story began in early May, when a Little Black Stray Kitty Girl made her way into our yard, and into our hearts, and soon gave birth to her little ones in a woodpile by the fence. We watched, we waited. And in time we had the great pleasure of meeting her three kits.
By mid June, they were all regular visitors in our front yard and on our front porch -- having breakfast and dinner, water and treats in between. And toys to play with.
As they grew, our affection for them grew and we named them all: Annie, Bravo, Charlie and Delta Dawn. At the time we planned to trap them for spay/neuter, little Bravo mysteriously disappeared, never to be see again. We trapped the others and soon discovered that Charlie was really Charlotte. And Delta Dawn was really Delta Don... sadly, our Delta did not survive the surgery. But Annie and Charlie were brought back home, whole and healthy, and released back into our yard and woods.
Time went on and they stayed and made this their home, always there at mealtime, napping on the porch throughout the day, bringing us so many hours of pleasure. And creating a great deal of curiosity for Maggy and Zoey who would fight for space on the window sills to watch these "new" cats. Both kept a distance, our interaction was limited to the visual and verbal.
We made plans to trap them again, bring them into our enclosed back porch, tame them and have them become family along with Maggy and Zoey. But we delayed, due to my husbands impending surgery. We felt it could wait until after he was home, and well.
But life has a way of making its own plans. The very weekend before my husbands hospitalization, Annie and Charlie did not come for meals or to play. There was no sign of them for a day, for two days, for more.
The same week of my husbands surgery was the week of Tropical Storm Fay. Distraught over Annie and Charlies absence I posted their picture and description with numerous area vet clinics, shelters and the humane society. And posters went up in nearby stores. While at the hospital, I received a phone call from a woman who had seen them in her yard and had given food to them. As fate would have it, she lived in a flooded area near to us, that no one was allowed to enter (the National Guard stopped all non residents). I took her number and asked her to keep an eye on them. But that phone number (I had no address or last name for her) was on a scrap of paper, hastily written in a hospital room -- and it was lost. I've since searched high and low for that bit of paper with her number, and it is not to be found.
Like Annie and Charlie, lost. It has been one full month now. They've not been seen, they have not returned. I search for them as I go out the driveway, as I drive down the road. I don't go on the front porch without hoping to see them.
What lesson did we learn: do not put off until tomorrow what you can do today.
What did we gain from this experience: great joy and so many moments of pleasure from them both, two little feral kitties -- kitties we never even touched or held.
Why Thankful Thursday: because we are thankful they came to us, if only for a short time and being optimists we believe they have not come to harm, but found safety elsewhere.
Annie and Charlie, and Bravo and Delta Dawn -- you are loved, you are missed, yet you were Born Free, and you are Living Free.

LIFE WITH CHARLIE

Lucy: Why do you think we're put here on earth Charlie (Brown)?
Charlie (Brown): To make others happy.
Linus: What would you say you want most out of life, Charlie (Brown)?
To be happy?
Charlie (Brown): Oh, no. I don't expect that. I really don't.
I just don't want to be unhappy!
Thank You Charlie for bringing the Zoolatry Family so much happiness.
